What is Influenza A&B?

The flu, or influenza, is a viral infection that affects the respiratory system. There are four types of influenza viruses: A, B, C, and D.

Influenza A and B viruses cause seasonal epidemics of disease in people (known as flu season) almost every winter in Canada, especially in a big city like Toronto. The flu is often mistaken for a cold as it can have similar symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, and sore throat. However, the flu tends to come on suddenly and is usually more severe than a cold.

Symptoms of the flu also include having a fever, aching muscles, chills and sweats, headache, dry persistent cough, shortness of breath, feeling tired and weak, and in some cases vomiting and diarrhea. It’s worth noting that vomiting and diarrhea are more common in children than adults.

Influenza A&B is a highly contagious viral infection and testing is an important part of the treatment and prevention journey.

Benefits of an At-Home Test for Influenza A&B

  • Avoid the risk of contracting other viral and/or bacterial infections from the waiting room.
